Genesis HealthCare’s ACO Growing Through Partnerships

Genesis HealthCare (Genesis) provides inpatient services through 384 skilled nursing, assisted/senior living and behavioral health centers located in 26 states. Genesis’ core strategy is to provide superior clinical outcomes with an approach that is patient-centered and focused on lowering costs by reducing lengths of stay and improving outcomes by developing programs to prevent avoidable rehospitalizations.

In 2016, LTC ACO, formerly known as Genesis Healthcare ACO, began participating in the Medicare Shared Savings Program (MSSP) through Genesis HealthCare’s Genesis Physician Services (GPS) division. GPS has physicians, physician assistants and nurse practitioners who make more than half a million visits annually to both short- and long-stay patients, helping improve overall healthcare quality and reduce unnecessary hospital readmissions.

Long-term care physicians that help care for residents in SavaSeniorCare facilities will now be able to participate in the Medicare Shared Savings Program through Genesis Healthcare’s accountable care organization.

Genesis announced the partnership between its LTC ACO and skilled nursing provider SavaSeniorCare. The company recently announced a similar partnership with Senior Living Properties.

The provider organizations hope the partnership helps improve patient outcomes and reduce hospitalizations for residents. The partnership does not require any capital outlay.

In December, LTC ACO announced the addition of 200 new, unaffiliated long-term care facilities just weeks after announcing plans to expand the ACO.

Takeaway: With nearly four years of billing history, LTC ACO is the only post-acute provider in the country able to form an ACO via the MSSP
