Spotlight on PBMs: Chapter 2 – Market Climbers. AMI’s 2018 Annual Review of Pharmacy Benefit Managers (PBMs) finds participants under increasing scrutiny for the role they play in the high prices of drugs in today’s market.
Consolidation in the PBM market has resulted in a small number of larger players that are able to leverage their size for more negotiating power with insurers and drug makers. PBMs, commonly referred to middlemen in today’s market, have been able to obtain significant influence over pricing and competition.
This increase in drug pricing influence has come with a cost, as drug makers have blamed PBMs for not passing along savings from rebates and discounts to health plans and employers, and ultimately patients. Advocacy groups and politicians have criticized PBMs for their lack of transparency about the role they play in drug prices.
Current PBMs are scrambling to develop strategies to succeed, health plans are creating in-house PBMs, IT based companies are eyeing small niches to compete, and new entries, especially Amazon, are beginning to surface.
AMI’s report, Spotlight on PBMs: 2018 Annual Review, identifies the major players in the PBM market and focuses on the company’s Value Proposition and strategy to prosper in today’s turbulent market.
The report, in addition to providing an insightful background on the market, segments the companies participating in the PBM market into five groups:
