Hospice focuses on caring, not curing and in most cases care is provided in the patient’s home, but may also be provided in freestanding hospice facilities, hospitals, nursing homes, or other long-term care facilities.
More than 1.7 million Medicare beneficiaries were enrolled in hospice care for one day or more in 2021. Total Medicare payments for hospice were approximately $23.1 billion in 2021. The average lifetime length of stay for Medicare beneficiaries was 92 days in 2021.
The Social Security Act requires hospice programs to provide individuals under hospice care with drugs and biologicals related to the palliation and management of the terminal illness as defined in the hospice plan of care.
As the market grows, the relationship between hospice care and pharmacy continues to evolve with basically two types of providers: the independent local pharmacy direct, and pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) which allow hospice clients to utilize a preferred network of local pharmacies and provide reimbursement options.
There were more than 5,350 Medicare participating hospices in operation in 2021, with growth being driven by the increasing number of for-profit hospices.
