The mental health crisis in the United States is evolving rapidly and can be seen throughout all segments of society.
According to Mental Health America, nearly 1 in 5 American adults will have a diagnosable mental health condition in any given year. 46 percent of Americans will meet the criteria for a diagnosable health condition sometime in their life. Half of those people will develop conditions by the age of 14.
Mental illness costs the U.S. economy $282 billion every year, equivalent to the average economic recession, researchers report. That estimate amounts to about 1.7% of American annual spending, and is about 30% larger than previous attempts to approximate the overall cost of mental illness in the United States, researchers said.
The behavioral health pharmacy industry is playing an increasingly larger role in the escalating demand for services as they assist patients suffering from mental health issues and may identify those that are non-compliant with therapies or need to seek additional medical evaluation.
