Health insurers experienced considerable merger activity over the last year, highlighted by Aetna/CVS Health, Cigna/Express Scripts, Health Net/Centene and WellCare/Centene. Consolidation should decrease in the near term, although industry buzz is currently focused on Humana.
Because of the aging population and healthcare reform, health insurers are expected to continue to focus on Medicare Advantage, managed Medicaid and the public insurance exchange. Companies recently acquired and merged are expected to focus on care delivery opportunities in local markets.
Health insurers are developing strategies how best to grow in an evolving market to respond to possible changes to the health policy landscape, high drug prices, and the single-payer system movement.
