The trend of shifting hospital-based care to home sites is resulting in a number of initiatives that increasingly expand the role that home-based care providers are now playing. This trend often targets specific conditions, including cancer care.
The American Cancer Society forecasts that 1.9 million new cancer cases are expected to be diagnosed in the United States this year resulting in the cost of caring for cancer patients being higher than ever before.
COVID-19 has resulted in an increased emphasis on home care and telehealth, as providers have reduced in-person visits during the pandemic. Many cancer centers are switching some patients to oral oncology medications instead of infused therapy and expanding home infusion services.
Challenges remain as the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) stated that home infusion of anticancer therapy is currently not a safe alternative to outpatient treatment.
