A group purchasing organization (GPO) is an entity that helps healthcare providers—such as hospitals, nursing homes, surgery centers and clinics, and home health agencies—realize savings and efficiencies by aggregating purchasing volume and using that leverage to negotiate discounts with manufacturers, distributors and other vendors.
GPOs can help leverage the purchasing power of a group of businesses to get discounts from vendors based on the collective buying power of the GPO members. They also provide legal and contracting support to hospitals with hospitals and health systems and their numerous vendors.
GPOs are working to evolve as health systems are taking more control of their supply chains and against the backdrop of Amazon’s possible role in the industry. GPO consolidation is increasing, recent examples include the acquisition of ROi by HealthTrust and Premier’s acquisition of Acurity and Nexara.
Oncology GPOs negotiate favorable pricing with pharmaceutical manufacturers through aggregated purchasing and also act as an aggregator of data of physician behavior with oncology practices.
During the current pandemic, GPOs are striving to offer a coordinated and comprehensive response to industry stakeholders, including members, providers, and government agencies through their supply purchasing, and data and technology capabilities.
AMI’s GPO 2020 Annual Review provides profiles on more than 45 of the leading GPOs which include: organization background, address/phone, executive contact, programs and services, and recent activities.
