The retail pharmacy landscape continues to evolve with many brick and mortar pharmacies closing. In order to fill this gap left by the pharmacy closing, a growing number of direct to consumer pharmacies have been launched. Pharmacy retail chains are also pivoting to omnichannel, including digital, options.
The sale of prescription drugs in the United States (U.S.) is regulated by a comprehensive set of federal and state laws. Online, or digital, pharmacies are accredited by the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP) and need to follow precise rules of practice.
Growth of digital pharmacies is being driven by the potential to decrease drug errors, improve prescription accessibility, and provide pharmacists more time to consult with patients.
Online and mail-order pharmacies need to be properly licensed to operate legally in every state where orders are placed. The requirements or issuing authority for the appropriate licenses vary by state.
Digital pharmacy startups experienced a downturn in 2022, as some closed or were acquired by other market players. Also, a number of digital pharmacy startups experienced staff cuts. Medly closed, NowRx was acquired by Alto Pharmacy. Capsule and Truepill experienced staff layoffs.
