MyWalgreens Revamped to Accelerate the Company’s Digital Transformation

Walgreens, one of the nation’s largest drugstore chains, recently overhauled its customer loyalty program (MyWalgreens) to be more health-and-wellness-centered and highlight the company’s omnichannel offerings to make shopping more seamless. 

Walgreens operates approximately 9,021  drugstores with a presence in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, along with its omnichannel business, 

Walgreens interacts with approximately 8 million customers in its stores and online each day. Walgreens filled 287.6 million prescriptions (including immunizations) on a 30-day adjusted basis in fiscal 2020.

Walgreens’ strategic priorities include:

  • Deliver essential services while accelerating the digitalization of the company.
  • Transform and restructure retail offering by expanding the company’s healthcare platform to deliver personalized experience.
  • Accelerate omni-channel convenience offerings.
  • Create neighborhood health destinations

MyWalgreens comes with new benefits for members, who can now earn 1% Walgreens Cash rewards storewide, 5% Walgreens cash rewards on Walgreens-branded products and personalized “only for you” deals.

The myWalgreens launch also brings with it a completely redesigned Walgreens mobile app that includes store pickup purchasing options (with as little as 30-minute pickup at some stores), 24/7 pharmacy chat, access to find and book medical care and vaccination appointments, personal health-and-wellness advice, and real-time flu alerts, among other features.

The company said that current Balance Rewards members (more than 90 million) can transfer their membership to myWalgreens at through Jan. 31, 2021 in order to ensure that their existing rewards roll over to the new program. Walgreens said it plans to add more benefits over the next several months. 

Walgreens also provides specialty pharmacy and mail services and offers in-store clinics and other health care services throughout the United States, most of which are operated by health care strategic partners.
